Cartecay River Experience (map)
Join us for a beautiful, guided kayak trip down the Cartecay River in Ellijay!
We will carpool from Cumberland Mall at 10 a.m. up to Ellijay (approx 1.25 hr). Please bring a picnic lunch and a chair/blanket. There is a picnic area along the river, and we will eat lunch after our arrival.
Then at approximately 1:00 we will begin a 1 1/2 hour guided trip down the river! This should be a great trip for both experienced paddlers and newbies. The majority of the trip is Class II rapids, but water levels may be higher with the rainfall coming from TN this year.
Please join us for a new river experience!
Update 8/4:
A number of you had asked about bringing your own kayaks, and the shuttle fee for same. Yes, you can do so, and it will be $12 per person, which will also cover the guides (as this is a guided trip). You can make that payment through the RSVP on the site--just change the payment amount to $12 and indicate in your RSVP that you are bringing your own boat. Thanks!!
@RT--Yes, it includes the kayaks; life vests; etc. and the fee for the guides.
It's $5.00 for a shuttle. However, this is info off another Meetup site, so I don't know if that is per a group discount or if that's the regular price.
The outfitter's number is 706-531-4746.
Since this is a 'guided' paddle, there may not be a discount or it may be small. I am sure one of our hosts will find out so all of us with kayaks won't be annoying the outfitter.
I have only kayaked once 30 years ago. I would like to go but I do not want to hold the group up. I am athletic and think I can pick it up. Please let me know what you think!
@ Andy - well, you've got one up on me. I've NEVER done it before so I can guarantee you will be ahead of me.
I will ask the outfitter about people that want to bring their own boats and let you know ASAP. (May be next week--sorry.)
I would like to go on this trip but I too have my own boat and cannot rsvp without paying $32.
Folks, please give Amity a chance. She said she would look into possible shuttle only rates. If there is a price difference, once she knows what it is we can sign up. Please remember, this is a 'guided' paddle and sometimes there is no price difference on guided floats.
I just sent out an e-mail to everyone about the shuttle fee for private kayaks. :)
what section of the river will this trip cover?
Does this have a "sit on top" kayak option? Or are they all "sit in"? Is there an option for single vs. double kayaks?
is this still open and looks like a 12' SOT kayak might just make it on the river okay what do you think?
I just talked to the outfitter again. He has both sit-on-top and sit-in kayaks so you can choose what you like when we arrive.
He said it's the "main section" of the river that we're doing: from Lower Cartecay Road to the Blackberry Waterfalls.
He actually estimated that the trip would be 2+ hours (different than what he told me the first time).
yes I have my own 12' SOT kayak, wasn't sure if it was too big for the shuttle. but should be alright I imagine. I will drive since I am taking it on top of SUV. So Linda you can ride with me if you'd like. Have room for two others as well. Eric
Hey Eric, since Linda and I are coming from the same area I'll ride with you too if you still have room.

@Deep--If you would like to pay for yourself and 6 friends, then I can edit the event for you to bring that many.
I just signed up. I am a newbie and haven't done this before. Where at Cumberland Mall is everyone meeting to carpool?
