POTTERY PAINTING

POTTERY PAINTING

Let's get out of the heat and do something.

How Does it Work?

What do I do when I get to That Pottery Place?
The first thing to do is to take a place at a studio table, where we will set you up with a bowl of water, a sponge, and some brushes. Then take a look around at our selection of unpainted pieces (it's called 'bisque') and find the piece that you want to paint. If this is your first time or if you need a refresher, our staff will give you an overview of the basic process and techniques.

Back at your table, wet the sponge and squeeze it out almost dry, then lightly sponge your piece just to get the ceramic dust off it (you aren't washing it, just dusting it). Depending on how you want to paint, you can apply a base color (or not) then lightly pencil the design onto the bisque (all pencil marks will burn off in the kiln, so don't worry about any stray marks or “ do overs ” !) Check out our stencils, stamps, and idea books or use a design of your own creation. Select your colors, and our staff will get you a palette with the paint (colored underglaze). Have fun painting your piece (and, of course, feel free to ask questions) then leave it all on the table for us, and you are ready to check out.

Do I need to bring anything?
We have all the supplies you'll need, including stencils, stamps, design ideas, and assistance.

How long will it take me?
That will vary according to your design, but it usually takes about an hour to an hour and a half. We don't charge studio time, so you don't need to rush - take the time you need and have fun! If you can't finish in one session, you can take your piece home and finish it with us another time.

When will my piece be ready?
We usually fire twice a week, so your piece will be ready in 4 to 5 days, but during very busy times (like holidays) it might take a day or two longer. We'll let you know when you check out when you can pick up your order and if there's any change, we'll call you.

How much will it cost?
We have a wide selection of pieces with prices for every budget. Small, simple things like sauce or rice bowls are around $8 to $10, cups and mugs range from $14 to $25 (for an oversized latte cup and saucer), plates are $16 to $30, banks are $20, figurines are $8 to $25, large platters and canisters are $45 to $65, and so on. Our prices include everything: bisque, paint, glazing, firing - we don't charge hourly studio fees so you know the price up front.

Can I bring food and drinks?
You are welcome to bring food and drinks, including 'adult' beverages (if you are over 21). We also have bottled water and soft drinks for sale.
